The short answer

The best way to get home insurance in Ottawa is to have an independent broker compare 12+ insurers against your actual house: its age, its distance from the Ottawa or Rideau River, its roof and its heating. An older Glebe home and a new Barrhaven build are priced very differently, so one quote rarely tells you what is fair.

I'm Suneet Sharma, an RIBO-licensed independent broker, and I place home insurance in Ottawa by comparing 12+ of Canada's top-rated insurers against the realities of your street, your house and a capital-region winter.

Ottawa homeowners deal with a mix of risks few other Ontario cities combine: long, hard winters, two rivers and a canal running through the urban area, and a housing stock that ranges from brick homes in the Glebe to subdivisions in Kanata finished only a few years ago. I look at your specific house first, then shop home insurance across many insurers and explain each option in plain English.

I'm licensed across Ontario and work remotely with Ottawa clients by phone, email and e-signature, so the distance from my Toronto office never slows a file down. If you also drive, I can quote home and auto together so you see the combined number. If you rent or own a condo in Centretown or Sandy Hill, I place condo and tenant insurance too, usually the same day.

Older homes in the Glebe, Westboro & Centretown vs newer Kanata, Barrhaven & Orléans builds

Ottawa's inner neighbourhoods are full of character homes that insurers study closely. A brick house in the Glebe or Old Ottawa South may still have original plaster, a converted coal or oil heating system, galvanized supply lines or sections of older wiring, and each of those items changes which companies will write the policy and at what price. Westboro adds a different pattern: older bungalows torn down or heavily renovated into modern infills, where the rebuild value can be far higher than the original record suggests. Centretown has many houses split into flats, which raises questions about rental units and multiple kitchens. I ask about updates up front and match the home to insurers that actually want that profile.

The suburbs bring their own checklist. A newer home in Kanata, Barrhaven, Riverside South or Orléans usually scores well on wiring, plumbing and roof age, which many insurers reward. The things I watch there are finished basements, sump pumps and backwater valves, and whether the replacement cost matches what it would genuinely take to rebuild a larger home with modern finishes.

River flooding, spring melt & what your Ottawa policy really covers

Ottawa sits where the Ottawa, Rideau and Gatineau rivers meet, and spring melt can push water into low-lying areas along the Ottawa River such as Constance Bay, Britannia and parts of Cumberland. Further from the river, the bigger concern is usually water coming up through a floor drain or seeping in as snow melts against the foundation. These are separate perils. Sewer backup and overland water are generally optional endorsements, not automatic, and some river-adjacent addresses face restricted overland options or higher deductibles.

I read the wording with you so you know exactly which kind of water is covered and with what limit, especially if your basement is finished. My guide on whether home insurance covers water damage in Ontario is a useful primer before we talk.

Ice dams, frozen pipes & other Ottawa winter claims

Deep cold followed by a thaw is what turns an Ottawa roof into a problem. Heat escaping through the attic melts snow, the water refreezes at the eaves, and an ice dam can force meltwater under the shingles and into ceilings and walls. Frozen and burst pipes are the other classic winter claim, particularly in homes left empty during a February trip or in older houses with plumbing on exterior walls. Policies treat sudden water escape differently from gradual leaks, and most require reasonable care such as keeping heat on or having someone check the house while you are away. I explain those conditions clearly so a winter vacation or a cottage weekend does not quietly create a gap in your cover.

What drives the price of home insurance in Ottawa

There is no single Ottawa rate. Your premium depends on the estimated cost to rebuild, not the market value of the house; the age and type of roof; the condition of wiring, plumbing and heating; distance to a fire hydrant and station, which matters on rural lots in places like Manotick or Carp; your water endorsements and the deductible you choose; and your claims history. Monitored alarms, a backwater valve, a newer roof and a home and auto bundle can all help. My article on what raises a home insurance premium in Ontario covers the full list of factors.

Good questions

Before you

Common questions about home insurance in Ottawa. Don’t see yours? Just call or send the form.

How much is home insurance in Ottawa?

It depends on your rebuild cost, home age, roof, heating, water endorsements and deductible, so prices vary widely between a new Barrhaven home and an older Glebe house. I compare 12+ insurers to find your fair number. See my guide to home insurance costs in Ontario.

Does my Ottawa home insurance cover river flooding?

Only if you add overland-water coverage, and availability depends on how close you are to the Ottawa or Rideau River. Sewer backup is a separate endorsement. I check what each insurer will offer at your address and explain the limits and deductibles before you choose.

Is ice-dam damage covered in Ottawa?

Sudden water damage from an ice dam is often covered under a broad homeowners policy, but wording varies and some insurers exclude or limit it. Gradual leaks and wear are generally not covered. I compare how different insurers treat ice damming so you are not surprised in March.

I work for the federal government. Can I get a group or professional discount?

Some insurers offer discounts for certain professions, employers or association members, and others reward claims-free history, mortgage-free homes or bundling. Eligibility varies by company, so I check which of the 12+ insurers I compare will recognize your situation.

Can a Toronto-based broker insure my Ottawa home?

Yes. I'm licensed across Ontario and handle Ottawa files entirely by phone and email, from quote to signed policy. You still get one broker at renewal and claim time. If you're new to Ottawa from abroad, see insurance for newcomers.
