The short answer

To get fair auto insurance in Markham, compare several insurers on the same driver profile instead of accepting one renewal notice. An independent broker comparing 12+ insurers can weigh your commute on the 404 or 407, the vehicles in your driveway, theft risk and each driver's history to find the company that rates your household best.

I'm Suneet Sharma, an RIBO-licensed independent broker, and I lower auto insurance in Markham by comparing 12+ of Canada's top-rated insurers for commuters, multi-vehicle families and drivers new to Canada.

Markham households tend to drive a lot. Many people commute down the 404 or across the 407 to offices in Toronto, Richmond Hill or Vaughan, and plenty of driveways in Unionville, Cornell and Berczy Village hold two or three vehicles for parents and teenage drivers. I shop personal auto insurance across many insurers and show you where each household member lands, side by side.

Markham is also home to many families who arrived recently and are building a Canadian driving record. I help newcomers to Canada present overseas experience properly, and I place policies for everyone from first-time drivers to long-time owners of SUVs. One licensed broker handles quotes, renewals and claims, so you never start over with a stranger.

Highway 404 & 407 commuters, multi-vehicle families & teen drivers

How you use the car shapes your premium. Insurers ask about annual kilometres, whether you drive to work or take the GO train from Unionville or Centennial, and who the principal operator of each vehicle is. Getting those details right matters: listing a teenager as an occasional driver on the family's lowest-value car, for example, is often more accurate than leaving them unassigned. I review each vehicle and driver so the policy reflects how your household actually drives.

Families with two or three vehicles often benefit from multi-vehicle discounts and from placing the home with the same insurer. If you own your house or condo, ask me to quote a home and auto bundle at the same time. For new drivers, my guide to new driver car insurance in Ontario explains how graduated licensing and driver training can help.

Vehicle theft, parking & protecting a newer car in Markham

Vehicle theft is a real worry across York Region, and certain popular SUVs and trucks attract more attention from thieves and from insurers. Some companies ask about anti-theft devices, tracking units or garage parking, and a few may require them for specific models. I know which insurers are more flexible and how each treats these devices, so you can make a sensible choice before you buy.

If you drive a newer vehicle, OPCF 43 can remove depreciation on a total loss within its time limits, and OPCF 20 provides transportation replacement such as a rental, but only if you purchased it. Theft and animal strikes fall under comprehensive or all-perils coverage, not collision, so the right coverage mix matters.

Winter driving, collisions & how a claim works in Markham

Snow squalls on the 404, black ice on Major Mackenzie and slow-speed fender benders in plaza parking lots all produce claims every winter. If you are hit by another insured, identified driver in Ontario, Direct Compensation – Property Damage means your own insurer pays for the share you were not at fault, though your DCPD deductible applies to that share unless your policy carries a $0 DCPD deductible. DCPD has been optional since January 1, 2024, so I confirm whether you have it. If anyone is hurt or combined damage exceeds $2,000, report it to police or a Collision Reporting Centre. You also have the right to choose your own repair shop, tow operator and rental company. My guide on what to do after a car accident in Ontario walks through each step.

What drives the price of car insurance in Markham

Your premium depends on your driving record and years licensed, the claims and convictions on your history, the make, model and theft profile of your vehicle, how far you drive and whether you commute, where the car is parked overnight, the coverages and deductibles you choose, and discounts for things like winter tires, bundling or multiple vehicles. Each insurer weighs these differently, which is why comparing 12+ companies often surfaces a better fit. My article on how to lower your car insurance in Ontario has more practical steps.

Good questions

Common questions about auto insurance in Markham. Don’t see yours? Just call or send the form.

Why is my Markham car insurance going up?

Premiums can rise because of a claim or conviction, a new driver added, a vehicle with a higher theft profile, or broader rate changes by your insurer. Shopping 12+ insurers often finds a better fit. See how to compare car insurance quotes.

Will a not-at-fault accident raise my rate in Markham?

Under Ontario rules, insurers can't raise your premium for a not-at-fault accident. At-fault accidents can affect your rate, and insurers typically consider them for several years. My post on whether car insurance goes up after an accident explains more.

I just moved to Markham from overseas. Can I get insured?

Yes. Some insurers will consider documented driving experience from your previous country, which can make a real difference to your price. I help you gather a letter of experience and licence history, then compare the insurers most open to recent arrivals.

Do I pay a deductible if someone else hits me?

Often, yes. Under DCPD your own insurer pays for the share you were not at fault, and the DCPD deductible is applied to that share. A driver who is 0% at fault generally pays it in full unless the policy has a $0 DCPD deductible. I can show you that option.

Does hitting a deer on a York Region road count as a collision claim?

No. Striking a deer or other animal is covered under comprehensive or all-perils coverage, not collision. If you only carry collision, an animal strike may not be covered, so I review your coverage mix with you, especially if you drive rural roads north of Markham.
